Pioneer seems to have designed this unit to add spring reverb to a home stereo. It uses RCA connectors and aesthetically matches Pioneer home stereo components of the era. While it lacks professional connectors or power supply and can introduce noise, especially on quiet signals, it effectively adds good-sounding reverb to a signal. In addition to a brushed aluminum faceplate and fake wood paneling, it provides a large and distinctive display to illustrate the time setting. The SR-202W replaced the SR-101, its tube predecessor. While not as quiet or flexible as professional units, the SR- 202W provides a nice stereo reverb effect at a very affordable price, as it typically sells used for less than $40.
