Many current recordings employ an unnecessarily cartoon-like style that abandons natural instrument sounds in favor of exaggerated caricatures of these sounds. Recorded both with Nicholas Vernhes in New York and Dominique Brusson in France, Remue successfully exaggerates the sound of natural instruments without ever sounding forced or cartoon- like. Dominique A's songwriting combines Continental European cabaret with English rock, with recognizable reference points from David Bowie's layered guitars to the Tindersticks' melodramatic tendencies. His fourth album Remue returns to the dark atmosphere of his debut La Fossette. It successfully combines beautiful songwriting with careful arrangement into a memorable pop record.
